À découvrir : Audrey Cantwell

(pictures from her Salem collection)

It started last Spring, when Audrey Cantwell went on Etsy to try to sell the samples she made while in school. Then, the demand grew bigger, she started making multiple sizes, and it became a label she called Black Market Baby. A quote I love from her website : "I cut and I sew and I save the more fortunate results".

Q: How did you get involved in fashion design ? A: I started making my own clothes when I was 13 or 14 because I couldn't find anything I wanted to wear in the shops near where I lived. I've always been into making things though, from clothes to collage to wood working, just about anything I can get my hands on I want to turn it into something else.

Q: What do you love most about creating fashion ? A: I love the moment when it stops looking like a bunch of clothes and starts looking like an actual collection.

Q: What inspired you for the Salem collection ? A: Salem was a mix of dark fantasy; witches, vampires, magick..and nature; the forest at night, northern wilderness, organic shapes and dark earth tones. The title Salem refers to the witch hunts of 1692, so I guess that brings a sort of melancholy and dark mood to the whole collection.

Q: Who are your favorite designers ? A: I love Vivienne Westwood for her attitude and her whole life story and how she turned into who she is today. I also love Rodarte, Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester.

Q: Who are your fashion icons ? A: Lots of people, punks, goths, anyone who has their own thing going really. Lydia Lunch of Teenage Jesus & The Jerks had pretty cool style. Patti Smith looks really good too.

Q: What are your favorite shopping spots in Montreal ? A: I buy most of my clothing in thrift stores but I love Cruella on Mont Royal for jewelry, and Reborn in the Old Port has everything I would like to have but can't afford.

Q: What is your favorite piece of the Salem collection ? A: The fur cape.

Q: Who is the Audrey Cantwell client ? A: Anyone really, one my of best clients is 60 years old with black and white streaked hair, she looks amazing. She looks like Cruella Deville. I think its for anyone who wants something different and not mass produced, and who has a slightly dark aesthetic.

Q:. Future plans for Black Market Baby ? A: Just keep doing that I'm doing, hopefully a few people will like it and that will allow me to continue.

Audrey Cantwell est disponible dans les boutiques Headquarters Galerie + Boutique, General 54 et dans sa boutique Etsy.
